Durham OneNet is a Municipal Services Corporation owned by the Regional Municipality of Durham in Ontario, Canada and has been tasked with building and operating a 700-km open-access fiber backbone.
As a dark fiber provider, Durham OneNet supports local ISPs, connects public facilities, and lays the groundwork for long-term economic development across the region.
Durham OneNet began with a clear mandate and a blank slate. With no legacy system to inherit, they had the chance to build something purpose-built that could serve communities across Ontario and set the standard for public broadband infrastructure in Canada.
As their network expanded, it became increasingly important to maintain visibility across every duct, cable, and splice closure while managing lease operations and network documentation with a focused internal team.
Problem
Without a unified system of record, Durham OneNet risked losing time and accuracy to manual recordkeeping. With multiple stakeholders, customer lease agreements, and hundreds of kilometers of fiber in play, they needed a system that could grow with them while simplifying day-to-day work.
